Gordon Scerri

Gordon joined Acumen in December 2007 as Assistant Manager within the Audit Department.

Gordon comes from Malta were he has worked for a big four firm as well as independent audit firms over the past ten years. During this time he acquired valuable experience in audit, accounts and consultancy for small and medium sized businesses.

Gordon intends to further develop his skills in audit and corporate finance whilst studying towards the final stages of his ACCA qualification

Elena Barnes

Elena's broad international business and financial experience has provided her with a solid foundation for her present role as Tax Manager in Acumen's Edinburgh office.

Her particular areas of expertise include advising a substantial medical practitioner client base, including London Harley Street consultants, HNW clients, aspects of international tax, including non-domiciles, expats, foreign nationals coming to work in the UK, cross border transactions, VAT, double taxation for companies and individuals, in addition to property developers, buy-to-let, inheritance tax planning, including trust and estate taxation. One of her strengths is helping to provide practical tax solutions to SME's including owner managed businesses.

She has hands-on management expertise in property, manufacturing, contracting and trading companies in the UK and Europe in addition to her considerable international financial advisers roles in Europe and the Arabian Gulf. She has also worked in product development and international marketing with a major hedge fund group.

Married with 1 son, Elena lives in Edinburgh .She is a Berlin University graduate in German language and literature. Elena is ATT qualified and is studying for CTA.

Lynne joined Acumen, as a Trainee Accountant, in 2001 after graduating from the University of Aberdeen with an MA (Hons) degree in Accountancy and Geography. Lynne qualified in 2006 and has since taken on the role of Client Relationship Manager. Lynne is responsible for managing a portfolio of medium to large clients.

Lynne lives in Aberdeen and in her spare time enjoys going to the cinema, reading and going to Aberdeen Football Club matches.

Donna joined the firm in 2000 as an accounts assistant and has recently qualified and is a member of ACCA. Since qualifying Donna has been appointed as an Assistant Manager in the audit and accounts department.

Donna currently lives in Portlethen and is married with one daughter. In her spare time she enjoys going to the cinema, reading and playing darts for a local team.

Lynne has over 9 years experience in the preparation of accounts and was recently appointed as an Assistant Manager specialising in sole traders, partnership and smaller sized limited companies.

Lynne is single and enjoys dancing, listening to traditional Scottish music & bothy ballads and researching genealogy & local history in her spare time.

Lesley is one of the firm’s longest serving employees. Lesley holds an ATT qualification and specialises in sole traders tax and partnerships tax. Lesley is also our farming tax specialist.

Lesley is married with 2 sons and in her spare time enjoys swimming, walking, socialising and researching genealogy.

Andy Bain

Andy holds an ATT qualification and has a wealth of experience advising on taxation issues gained in private practice and the Inland Revenue. Andy and his team advise individuals, partnerships and companies of all sizes on both personal and corporate taxation.
Andy is married and lives in rural Aberdeenshire. He enjoys visiting the gym, gardening, cycling and walking.

Barrie Alexander

Barrie joined Acumen in January 08. After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant he spent 7 years specializing in Insolvency. He heads up the Corporate Finance Department with great involvement in one off special projects dealing with corporate planning; financial restructuring; acquisitions, mergers and MBO's and business disposals.

Barrie is married with one son and two step daughters and lives in Dundee. In his spare time he enjoys all sports and in particular golf and football.

Lyn joined the Acumen team in April as a manager in the Audit and Accountancy team.

Lyn qualified in Aberdeen in 1990 as a CA and has since gained considerable experience within the SME sector. Lyn will manage a portfolio of clients and additionally has responsibility for the day to day management of the accounts production team at Acumen Accountants and Advisors Limited.

Brian specialises in farming clients and has extensive experience in advising this sector on both accountancy and taxation issues. In addition, Brian acts as company accountant for both Acumen Accountants and Advisors and Acumen Financial Planning.

Allyson joined the firm in 1998 as an accounts assistant in the audit department after graduating from the University of Aberdeen with a MA (Hons) degree in Psychology. Allyson qualified as a CA in 2002 and has recently taken up the position of Accounts Production Manager heading up a team of 4 who prepare the accounts of soletraders, partnerships and one man limited companies.
Allyson currently lives in New Pitsligo and commutes every day. In her spare time she enjoys going to the cinema, going for walks in the country and going shopping!

Lisa joined the firm in 2000 as our Senior Software Consultant, having previously run her own business for 5 years. Her main role is to assist clients with their software requirements be it accounting software or other packages that may help them run their businesses more efficiently. Lisa has been heavily involved with the Sage Software range since 1993 and Acumen was the first Company in the North East to become accredited as a Sage Business Solution Centre.
Lisa is married with two children and enjoys keeping fit and going to the gym. Lisa completed the London Marathon in April 2005.

Maureen Harrigan

With over 15 years experience, Maureen has experience as a qualified accountant, specialising in small owner-managed businesses. More recently she has specialised in taxation where she is part of the team who offer an all round service to our clients in respect of maximising their personal and corporate tax situations. She started her career in audit/accounts before transferring to specialise in tax. She holds the ATT qualification.

Maureen lives in Banchory and enjoys socialising.

Morag Pirie

Morag graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1996 with a MA in Accountancy. Since then she has since gained a vast experience in the production of management and annual accounts. She joined Acumen in 2001 and played a major role in outsourcing accounts preparation and payroll for clients. Morag is now the Acumen Bureau Services Manager. Her primary role is to manage and develop the growing payroll and bookkeeping outsourcing department. In her spare time Morag is a football referee and also enjoys cycling, walking her dog, playing the clarinet and the bagpipes.

Kay Newton graduated from The Robert Gordon University in 1993.

Kay returned to complete her diploma in Marketing in June 2000 and gained Chartered Marketer status in 2002 after completing a Masters in Marketing with The Robert Gordon University. Kay completed a diploma in business advice and counselling in 2003.

Kay enjoys spinning, body pump, swiss ball and body balance. Kay lives in Inverurie and spends the majority of her time at the gym. Kay is a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing committee - North of Scotland branch.

Steve McKenzie

Steven joined Acumen early in 2007, he qualified in 1999 and after spending five years working abroad with one of the Big Four firms before moving into Corporate Finance and then returning back to the UK and general practice. Since being back in the UK he has gathered significant experience in International Financial Reporting Standards and International Standards on Auditing, within FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 companies, while also managing to bring together his own portfolio of clients.

Steven is head of Accounting and Audit and is also head of our Edinburgh office which he set up in late 2007. Steven will be spreading his time between our Aberdeen and Edinburgh Office.

Steven is married with two children, he enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, playing golf and avoiding any form of DIY.

Carole Lovie

Carole joined the Acumen team in October 2005.

Her role involves dealing directly with owner managed businesses regarding their year-end accounting requirements. Carole also works with the Acumen Corporate department on client projects. Internally, she has responsibilities for staff training and development.

Carole is a fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (ACCA) and is actively involved in the local ACCA network. She has extensive and varied experience in banking, industry and professional practice.

Carole lives in Aberdeen and is married with a teenage son. In her spare time she can be found on the sidelines supporting her son´s football team or on the tennis court, playing fairly mediocre tennis!
